ASSISTANT CASINO MANAGER

My name is Sophie Escovidal. I am a proud Filipino working on a cruise ship for about ten years now, specifically with Carnival Cruise Lines, in the casino department. My journey into this unique lifestyle began with a combination of family influence and personal ambition.

Growing up in the Philippines, I was surrounded by stories of adventure and exploration. My father worked on a cruise ship for many years, which exposed me to the vibrant world of maritime life from an early age. I can still remember his vacations when he used to bring souvenir items, such as magnets, shirts or even beach towels. His experiences inspired me to seek opportunities beyond our shores, especially as I pursued my education.

My entry into the cruise industry was serendipitous. While visiting Philippines during one of my father’s assignments, I had the chance to tour on his ship. The experience was eye-opening; I saw firsthand how a cruise ship operates as a floating community filled with diverse cultures and opportunities. A year later, I took my first step into this world by accepting a position as a Casino Dealer on board Fascination.

Working in Casino was challenging but rewarding. It taught me resilience and hard work while allowing me to understand the inner workings of cruise operations. After three years in that role, I stepped up as a Casino Supervisor, where I found my passion in a deeper perspective. I worked diligently and gained valuable experience that contributed significantly to my growth. This role allows me to engage with people from all walks of life and contribute to creating memorable moments during their vacations.

Recently, I was honored to receive a promotion to Assistant Casino Manager on board Carnival Dream. It is one of the best birthday gifts I received from a very long time. I can still remember how I felt so overwhelmed when I had the Management Call. It is like another push of energy and a fresh start as a person. I consider myself blessed to meet along the way amazing people who believed in me. Bernard Kunder, who saw something in me and opened the door to reach this position. My trainer, Sunil Mane, who did not keep any knowledge to himself and trained me extensively. To my management team on board, Taffi Chakamanga, who always listens and imparting wise decisions that molded what I am today. Judith Chakamanga for her dear guidance and support. Lastly, Nes Bascara for giving his unwavering boost.  You are all part of my journey and will always have a special place in my heart.

As I continue this adventure, I remain grateful for the opportunities it has provided and looking forward to what lies ahead. I aim to further develop my leadership skills and contribute positively to the cruise line’s success.
